Club History

York Artistic Swimming Club was established back in 1988 originally called Aquatic Angels. It was established as a recreational program with swimmers working to achieve their Trillium Level awards.

The first year the Aquatic Angels were registered as competitive was in 1989/1990. The Club reorganized as Newmarket Synchronized Swim Club at the Competitive "B" Provincial Level in 1995/1996 with Gayle Wimmer as Head Coach until December 1998 when Mary-Jane Ling joined the club.

Mary-Jane Ling was the coach of the 12-14 age group team at the time. She was named Head Coach for the 1999/2000 season and the club was registered at the Competitive "A" National Level, competing that year at Nationals in Edmonton at the 12-14 age group. Newmarket Synchro offered programming at the Recreational, Provincial, and National levels of competitive synchro.

In January 2006, the name of Newmarket Synchronized Swim Club was changed and ratified to York Synchronized Swim Club to better represent our growing membership from across the region. York Synchronized Swim Club has grown to include practice venues in the townships of Aurora and Newmarket. To gain experience in deeper water, our competitive teams also train at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre (TPASC).

In 2018 FINA changed the name of the sport from synchronized swimming to artistic swimming.  In 2019 York Synchronized Swim Club changed its name to York Artistic Swimming Club to better represent the change in name of the sport.

In the 2022 - 2023 season, York Artistic Swimming Club successfully restored enrollment after years of Covid lockdowns, and re-introduced National (High Performance) program. Our national Solo and Youth Duet qualified for the National Competition in Calgary, with Youth Duet placing 7th nationally.

Today, York Artistic Swimming Club offers AquaGo! program, as well as full season programs at pre-competitive, as well as regional, provincial, and national competitive levels.

In 2024, YASC revised the logo to update the "n" motif under the legs to reflect our club name change that was introduced since 2006. The new motif consists of 2 water waves that contains a lowercase letter "y" in the form of where the "n" used to be. Included in the new design was a refinement of the leg figure to modern judging standards and the re-organization of the words on the badge for more symmetry reminiscent of the original in 1995.
